Chris is right, i also use akismet and i do know that it was kinda tricky in the beginning without any anti spam tool because i was getting hundred of fake comments each day

Akismet is pretty good but defensio is my best.Using it for a long time.

Evden, I just switched my personal blog to Defensio yesterday as a matter of fact. Akismet was letting a few too many spam comments through for my taste.

Akismet is a great tool, but I recently stumbled across another effective method of thwarting blog spam:

Add a new text input to your contact form, but style it as “visibility: hidden;”. When spam bots fill out these forms, they usually fill out all of the boxes with useless garbage. So… you can set your form to throw away submissions that contain text in the hidden input box. Works great for me!

Linda, “~Every spam is sacred…~” Wait. That doesn’t sound quite right. I’m sure there’s a Monty Python song in there somewhere though.

I’ve been impressed with how well Defensio has been holding up. We’ll see how they do as they grow now that they’ve opened it up to more users.

Excellent post Chris. You presented a good case for Defensio and I really enjoyed the Monty Python revival. I miss them even if they were a bunch of spammers!
