I feel that readers of blogs are looking to gain knowledge. They are reading the blog because it is about a topic that is of some interest to them.

After gaining that reader’s confidence in what it is the author has to say (on a regular basis), that is when the reader would be more inclined to ask for their professional services

communism is much more dependent on nationalism since personal goals are extracted by the state.. I just don't see a scenario it could work except in extended wartime when there has to be a collectivism. I would say on the free enterprise end, you have to have a regulated free market, something we've been drifting from in recent years to a concerning degree, imo.

I don't believe that communism can sustain long-term. The more ownership i feel toward my job, the harder I work. Communism forgets this concept almost altogether in my opinion.

Matt, That's why the communal system works so well for family units. Families have that love bond that enable sacrificial sharing. Well, in theory they do. I know some out there don't.

I think this part sums it up well "It’s a simple reality of human nature that folks will work much harder and be far more committed to that which they personally own and are permitted to profit directly from versus that which belongs to a group they are part of"...I know I wouldn't do more than I had to if it was always shared, but then again if you loved those around you, maybe you would?

Chris,

Thanks for taking the time to write a post based on my comment. I'm honored.

I think it's fair to say that I am the naive one. I still believe that people are happier if they have the support of a community, a tribe, or an extended family.

I agree that capitalism is the best system for initiative and innovation. I think that is clear.

I applaud the ability for people who are innovative to get ahead and prosper. I will put aside for a moment the insider cronyism that allows the rich to stay rich and help their friends be rich, regardless of rewards and effort. Every system has potential for abuse, and capitalism is no exception. Even with the abuses of our system, the level of innovation is simply astounding.

My belief is that a system that balances
the rewards to innovation provided by capitalism, and the social support of tribalism is the system that is most conducive to human happiness AND prosperity.

Kurt Voneghut once said that the problem with capitalism is that it is "too hard on stupid people."

I think that the epidemic of depression in our country despite the prosperity in general, and all of the shinny toys that can be had is a good indication that for all it's glitter, our system is leaving something to be desired.

Being poor sucks, and if you are really poor, you are probably not happy. BUT money is only an indication of increased happiness until it gets you out of poverty. After that, more money does not more happy make.

Having close friends, spending time with family, doing service to others, these are the factors that increase happiness to people who aren't poor.

I think we can have both, and I think it is up to us as individuals to create both, but I think it is important to recognize the limits of our system.

Thanks again Chris. Sorry if this is rambling, It's almost 1:00 AM, and I'm writing because I can't sleep.

Chris, I love your summary here - very good explanation.

But what I really like is that hope can really make such a difference! In fact, I especially like the the Bible's description of hope as "the anchor of the soul" (Heb. 6:19).

Now there's a great picture!
