CREEating Value

It’s been a while but we’re getting back on track with this feature here at SuccessCREEations.

Periodically I go through my feed reader and pull out a few gems that bring value to you as a business blogger.

CREEating Value ButtonWith over 80 million blogs out there finding a few that are worthy of making it to your feed reader can be a challenge. So I’m trying to make that a little easier by pointing out some great blogs that I have in my reader that you may or may not have seen yet.

So without further ado, here are this week’s juicy finds.

Enjoy!

Letting me be . . . random wondering and philosophy (feed) – Did you know Liz Strauss has other blogs besides Successful-Blog? She does. If you are looking for a little thoughtful reflection check out her blog over on Blogger with storytelling that brings back memories.

Google Public Policy Blog (feed) – As long as we are talking about blogs running on Blogger, you might want to check out the Google Public Policy Blog. Worried about Big Brother learning too much about your web habits? Here’s where you can find out what Big Brother himself has to say about all that. They recently had a good post explaining their position on Net Neutrality. Well worth the read.

Making Life Work For You (feed) – Let’s round out this edition with a brand new business blogger who is doing a fantastic job right out of the gate. April Groves is a local Realtor who is blogging to promote her business. But she gets the whole thing about providing value to her readers and she shares much more than just real estate information. (Did I mention she’s a good friend of Gorgeous?) She’s only been blogging a few short months, but she’s well on her way. I expect we’ll see great things from her.

There you have it. This week’s blogs that are CREEating Value. It’s hard to believe this feature has been resting since before SOBCon. I’m finally finding my old groove again. Glad to be back!

CREEating Value – 3 May 2007

May 3, 2007

CREEating Value – Periodically (in theory about once a week) I go through my feed reader and pull out a few gems that bring value to you as a business blogger.

CREEating Value ButtonWith over 70 million blogs out there finding a few that are worthy of making it to your feed reader can be a challenge. So I’m trying to make that a little easier by pointing out some great blogs that I have in my reader that you may or may not have seen yet.

So without further ado, here are this week’s juicy finds.

Enjoy!

Michael Stelzner’s Writing White Papers (feed) – Michael Stelzner has created a great resource in his blog with tons of tips that will make anyone’s writing better. His focus is on business writing, white papers and freelance writing. As a blogger I have several writing resources in my feed reader and Michael’s blog is one of the best.

Duct Tape Marketing (feed) – John Jantsch’s Duct Tape Marketing blog was started back in August 2003. In blogging terms that means it has been around just about forever. You want some help marketing your business? There’ s probably a half a dozen books worth of information in the archives here alone. Subscribe and learn for free.

Homeless Family’s Blog (feed) – A blog by a guy who lived out on the streets with his entire family might seem a strange choice for business bloggers to read. But John writes with such passion about his city and the homeless issue there that he can teach us all how to get a little more emotional and empathetic with our writing. John writes hard hitting posts about life that is happening right now, and it isn’t always pretty. But it is definitely worth subscribing to.

For those of you who are wondering about my low profile since I’ve been back in town, I am just trying to catch up with things at my day job from being away for a week unexpectedly. And that before I take off again next week for SOBCon.

Yes the conference is only a little more than a week away!

CREEating Value – Periodically (in theory about once a week) I go through my feed reader and pull out a few gems that bring value to you as a business blogger.

So without further ado, here are this week’s juicy finds.

Enjoy!

CrossLoop – Bringing People Closer (feed) – Here’s a company that has done a good job of leveraging their blog to get the word out about their business. CrossLoop is a service that allows for secure screen sharing between two computers in remote locations. It’s a handy application that has lots of different uses. If they didn’t have a blog, I wouldn’t have heard about it yet.

Sifry’s Alerts (feed) – David Sifry is the founder and CEO of Technorati, which if you don’t yet know has long been a great tool to track incoming links for your blog. His blog is where I pick up tid-bits like the fact that there are more than 70 million blogs out there. He also dropped a bit of a shocker last week when he announced that he’s looking for a replacement for himself in the CEO position of the company he founded.

The Weather Channel: Savannah Weather Outlook (feed) – OK so this last one is obviously not a blog. And it is a bit silly. But my point is this. There are a lot of non blogging web sites out there that are incorporating RSS into their websites. If I want to find out what to expect with my local weather, I can just go to my feed reader and click on a link. Bing. I’m there.

No going to the Weather Channel site, wading through their over the top obnoxious ads, putting in my location and all that. Makes finding out the weather much easier. (And it’s about the only thing that keeps me coming back to their site. They’ve got about the most intrusive ads of anywhere I go. The ones with sound are the worst!)

CREEating Value – 4 April 2007

CREEating Value Button
CREEating Value – About once a week I go through my feed reader and pull out a few gems that bring value to you as a business blogger. We’re overdue ’cause I sorta skipped last week. (oops!)

And I am personally going through a bit of a challenging week on the non-blogging front. So today I thought I’d go through and pick out a few that make me think, and that I find encouraging.

Here are this week’s juicy finds.

Enjoy!

How to Get Home (feed) – Mike Caputo is a mortgage broker who gets blogging. His posts about the lending industry give insights into how things work and help folks who are looking at financing. In the interest of full disclosure, Mike is a client of mine. But that just means that I know first hand what a great guy he is! Check out his blog if you are want a little insight into the lending process.

How to Change the World (feed) – Guy Kawasaki is a venture capitalist and one of the heavyweights of the bloggosphere. Just a quick glance at his LinkedIn Profile and you can see that he is somebody. I’m a fan of getting the best advice I can find. And if a somebody is willing to take the time to write someplace where I can glean insights for free, I’m in. You might want to be too.

Why the Rich Get Richer (feed) – Robert Kiyosaki can be a bit of a polarizing person. I’ve heard some people poo-poo his books and say he’s just a salesman. But there is no denying that he knows how to make money. And I’m willing to hear what someone with that kind of track record has to say. Especially when I can do it for free!

Enjoy!

Middle Zone Musings (feed) – Besides having one of those names that I am in perpetual fear of misspelling, Robert Hruzek has created a place at his blog where I can go hang out with a cup of coffee when I want to shift mental gears. At Middle Zone Musings I can relax and ponder some ideas. Sometimes they are big ideas, and sometimes just a little on the silly side. Either way, Robert’s got a refreshing take on things and I really enjoy hanging out at his place. And he just recently graduated himself from Blogger to WordPress too!

The Kitchen Table (feed) – Not sure if you know it or not, but I’m a fairly spiritual guy. I don’t like to beat people up with my views on the subject and I keep much of my spiritual stuff over on my personal blog. But this week has been a challenging one for me and hanging around Tariq Khan’s Kitchen Table has been just the right dose of encouragement for me. Tariq’s a brand new blogger that I had the pleasure of getting to know over at Open Comment Night one Tuesday. His writing may not be a good fit for everyone, but if you are up for some encouragement, head on over. I know I’m glad I do.

BrianKim.net (feed) – Brian Kim is a fairly traditional self-improvement writer who just happens to resonate with me. In fact it was Brian’s practical hands on advice in his post How to Find What You Love to Do that helped propel my business forward in the first place. Brian’s authored several books and has been a student of self improvement since he was a child. And yet he still shares all that wisdom freely with the world day after day on his blog. You are missing out if you choose not to read it.

CREEating Value – About once a week I go through my feed reader and pull out a few gems that bring value to you as a business blogger.

Here are this week’s juicy finds.

Enjoy!

Talking Story (feed) – Rosa Say is one of those names you will see all over the blogosphere if you hang around just a little while (and keep your eyes open). I see her dropping in on all sorts of places generously spreading her wisdom far and wide. She’s published a book, Managing with Aloha, where she shares 19 different Hawaiian values and how they can help managers in the business setting. And in her blog she freely shares tidbits of that Hawaiian wisdom for all of us to take in.

901am (feed) – Started by David Krug, but now with more contributers to mention, 901am sports a tag line that says “New media news every morning.” And they do serve up a healthy portion of news and anecdotes along with a steady dose of what-the-heck-is-going-on-out there. It’s not unusual for the 901am gang to serve up 5+ posts in a given day. I scan their headlines pretty much every day and usually find at least one or two posts that are “must reads”. Just know that some of their stuff can be a little course. It may not be the right flavor for everyone.

The Blog Herald (feed) – Speaking of new media news sources, The Blog Herald is another “must have” feeds in my reader. The Blog Herald had a bumpy 2006, changing ownership twice in less than a year. But the dust seems to have settled over there and they’ve found their groove. There are a ton of contributing writers who keep the information flowing. It’s another blog that regularly has 7 or 8 posts a day. But with all those contributers they seem to have their finger on the pulse of the bloggosphere. Well worth regularly scanning their headlines on a regular basis.

CREEating Value – 1 March 2007 – Special Blogtipping Edition

March 1, 2007

CREEating Value Button
CREEating Value – About once a week I go through my feed reader and pull out a few gems that bring value to you as a business blogger. This week’s CREEating Value just so happens to coincide with Blogtipping Day.

Blogtipping is a little thing started a while back by Easton Ellsworth over at BusinessBlogWire. The idea is on the first day of the month to go choose a few blogs out there, share three things you like about the blog and offer one constructive tip that could make their blog better.

I’ve never participated before, mostly because I don’t remember the date until well after I’ve posted and I miss it. Well today we’ve got a fortunate convergence of days!

So here are this week’s juicy finds, complete with tips.

Enjoy!

Working at Home on the Internet (feed) – Joe Hauckes is one of the first true blogging friends I ever made. He’s incredibly generous with his time and his talents. He was one of the first to dialog with me back and forth on our blogs consistently when I was getting started. He is not afraid to try new things and wants the details to be right because he wants the best for his readers. His site has a forum. Joe hosts and manages the Work at Home Blog Carnival. Even though we’ve got our own things going now and don’t “see” as much of each other as in days of old, I still consider Joe a good friend and I’m so looking forward to meeting him in person at SOBCon ‘07.

Tip – Joe keep keeping your priorities just where you’ve got them. Family first. Us bloggers will still be here when the dust settles.

Black In Business (feed) – Jim Walton is one of those guys that on first brush I wouldn’t think I’d have much in common with. I mean just put our two pictures side by side! But Jim’s passion for his subject is compelling. He writes about the challenges and what it takes to be black and in business. I really don’t didn’t have a clue about the issues that I don’t face as a white guy. Jim is not afraid to wade into the sticky subjects from time to time. And yet his is still a blog for ordinary people wanting extraordinary success. He’s another fella I’m looking forward to meeting this May in Chicago.

Tip – Jim consider putting up a button to make it easier for folks to subscribe to your feed. I had to dig the link for you feed from my reader this morning.

ConverStations (feed) – As long as we are on the subject of guys I’m looking forward to meeting face to face in Chicago, Mike Sansone is definitely on my short list too. His blog is well on the way to becoming the definitive resource for business blogging. His Itinerary page is a tremendous resource chock full of all kinds of business blogging know how treasures. Then there’s his Blogroll page! Holy Smokes! If you never looked at another blog outside of the ones he has there you would still be miles ahead of the pack.

Tip – I feel a little awkward “tipping” such and accomplished master. I do have a stylistic idea, though Mike. If you changed to a three column layout you could have even more of your great resource information available on your front page.

CREEating Value – About once a week I go through my feed reader and pull out a few gems that bring value to you as a business blogger. Here are this week’s juicy finds.

Enjoy!

Healthy Web Design (feed) – Some folks believe it is dumb to link to someone who might be seen as competition for your business. Personally I don’t subscribe to that thinking. There is so much to go around, why wouldn’t I want to share good thinkers with y’all?

And Dawud Miracle is one of those guys. He’s into helping businesses improve their web presence. And he truly gets blogging. He understand the power and versatility it brings to businesses. Not bad for a guy coming at our business from the traditional web site design side of things. I think the reason Dawud get it is because he has embraced blogging whole heartedly in his own business. Web consultants who are actually blogging have a huge leg up when it comes to helping businesses get on board the blog wagon. Dawud is constantly adding to the conversation. Check him out.

Business Blog Summit (feed) – Here’s a blog that was started to support a business that helps businesses learn about business blogging. (Did ya follow all that?) You get the best of both worlds from these guys. They run a conference called the Business Blog Summit. And their blog is one of their primary marketing arms. Subscribe to them and you’ll see how a blog can help your business while reading on the topic at the same time.

Business Blog Consulting (feed) – You know, I might as well keep rolling with links to the “competition”. This is one of the early adapters to the business blog consulting world. That’s how they got such a great domain name! But the reason they are popular is because they produce good stuff. If you looking to learn more about blogging for your business, add these guys to your reader too.

CREEating Value – 16 February 2007

CREEating Value Button
CREEating Value – About once a week I go through my feed reader and pull out a few gems that bring value to you as a business blogger. We are a little late this week, but regardless, here are this week’s juicy finds.

Enjoy!

Successful-Blog (feed) – I’ve hesitated to list Liz Strauss and Successful-Blog here as creating value because it might appear to be a little self promoting. You see I contribute over there from time to time (usually on Wednesdays opposite CREEating Value over here – I just envisioned a “Go see my post over there” kind of thing). But that’s not fair to those of you who might not know about her blog. Besides this week’s all out of whack here anyway so there’s no problem.

Successful-Blog was one of the very first feeds in my reader. Liz’s writing is thought provoking and conversation stirring. She is the master of community. Her self-stated goal is to build a place where folks can hang out in much the same way that her bar-owner father created in his time. If you don’t subscribe to Successful-Blog you will want to right away. And I bet you find you click through to comment more there than most anywhere else.

And I happen to know that Liz is cooking up something very special that you are going to want to be in on. But you’re going to have to wait until Sunday to find out what…

Christine Kane Blog (feed) – I put Christine Kane’s feed into a folder I labeled “Fun Stuff” because she’s a musician with a few CD’s out so I figured her blog would be light, music related stuff, right? Boy did I miss the mark there! Christine writes such thought provoking stuff on her blog that I’ve gotten used to gearing up and engaging my brain before I take a gander at her posts. Sometimes her stuff is more women oriented and as I guy I just skim over that. But the rest of it… Good stuff. Just plan on thinking. That’s all I can say.

The Dilbert Comic Strip (feed) – As long as we’re in my “Fun Stuff” folder, did you know you can subscribe to many cartoons by feed? Dilbert is one of my current favorites. And I can check it out every day via feed. That way when life gets a little stressful, like say this week for example, I can take a few seconds, click on the feed and shed a little levity on the situation. Perfect.

CREEating Value – About once a week I go through my feed reader and pull out a few gems that bring value to you as a business blogger. Here are this week’s juicy finds.

Enjoy!

Success from the Nest (feed) – Tony D. Clark is incredibly talented. He posts about working from home with an eye towards keeping balance, excitement and creativity alive. His Creative Venture podcast is also great stuff. But the best part is clicking through his feed and seeing his phenomenal theme full of his original cartoon drawings. Worth way more than the price of admission.

One By One Media (feed) – Jim Turner and the gang at OBYM are business communication specialists who are 100% sold on the value of blogging. They share tons of valuable information that can help any business blogger become even more effective and successful. In fact, they are so sold on the value of blogging that they are in the process of doing away with their old company site that their blog supported and becoming all blog, all the time. (So if you find a bad link or two, think about their guts taking on the daunting challenge of changing the URL of every post from nearly two years of blogging!)

Trevor’s Writing (feed) – Most of us bloggers are writers of one degree or another. For those who blog in support of their business, writing is often not a primary skill. Trevor Hampel is an Australian who can help. He’s a teacher, writer, librarian – someone who’s full of insight and willing to share. Sometimes it’s a little poetry, or some sage advice. Regardless it is always a treat in my reader.
