The Number One Reason The Rich Get Richer

Thanks for visiting!

A few years ago I was working for a company that was struggling financially. We all knew things were not going well for the company. It was in the transportation sector and the downturn that part of our economy suffered after 9/11 was just enough to push the weak company over the edge.

I had seen the writing on the wall a few months before the end and talked to my wife about looking for another job before it got to that point. We decided to stick it out. We had our reasons.

In the end we all lost our jobs. I was the operations manager so I was literally the last one out the door at 10 PM on that Friday night. The company was to be bought out by a competitor so we were told to come back on Monday and there’d just be a different name sign out front. However I got a call first thing Saturday morning from my boss telling me that negotiations had fallen apart during the night and Monday we’d all be cleaning out our desks.

He later told me that day of making calls was the worst day of his life. I believe it.

All of us who worked there walked out with nothing. We had folks who’d worked for the company 30+ years. Their pensions disappeared over night. It was very bad.

Fortunately for my wife and I we already knew the number one reason the wealthy continue to build their wealth while the rest of the vast masses of mediocrity just barely scrape by pay check to pay check while their credit card debt slowly grows out of hand.

And what is that one thing the wealthy do differently? Read more

One Thing Conventional Wisdom Gets Wrong About Success

September 7, 2006

Do you crave more success than you have yet achieved?

Do you know deep in your being that you were meant for something bigger but just can’t seem to break free of the rut you find yourself in?

There is one thing that we are told over and over again from the time we are small children that gets in the way of that success and freedom we were wired to crave. Our parents started teaching it to us. Our schools are specially designed to force us away from success at this point.

When we enter the work place, most of our supervisors put effort into building this barrier which keeps us from maximizing our potential. The very evaluation system that is often used by companies often forces us to prioritize exactly backwards to what would make us most valuable to the company.

The process many of us find ourselves in creates a vicious cycle that continually leads us further and further from where we really want to go. Those of us who are especially driven to succeed may even pay to go to expensive conferences and seminars all the while reinforcing this very barrier to success, misguidedly thinking that they are helping to improve their situation.

What is it that conventional wisdom gets so completely wrong about how to succeed?

Success Principle #6 - Successful People Overcome Fear

September 5, 2006

Everyone is afraid of something. And most of us have bunches of little fears, worries and apprehensions that we walk around with every day. Some are bigger than others. And some are more rational than others.

One of the things that separates successful people from the wallowing masses trapped in mediocrity out there is their ability to overcome their fears and move beyond them. For so many of us fear paralyzes our potential. It keeps us from moving forward and achieving the success that is calling to us.

I know fear has held me back for years.

The Source of Fear

Fear is hardwired into each of us. It is a natural phenomenon that can be critical to our survival. Read more

Problems with Internet Explorer

September 5, 2006

My friend Rick Cockrum was kind enough to let me know about a problem Internet Explorer is having applying the style sheets to SuccessCREEations here. It seems that sometimes IE chooses to forget to apply any formatting to pages here until after the refresh button is clicked. And sometimes pages are shown correctly the first time.

I haven’t been able to see any rhyme or reason to how IE is behaving or to detect a pattern. Go figure.

There is a work around but it is cumbersome and it will eliminate one of the nice features of this theme, which is its flexibility and ease to make changes. I’ve been in contact with the author of the theme to see if we can come up with a less labor intensive solution.

In the mean time Iet me suggest that this might be a good opportunity for all of you IE users out there to make the switch to Firefox for your browsing pleasure. I use FF and didn’t even realize there was a problem until Rick brought it to my attention.

I am a big fan of Firefox because of it is so customizable. It is an open source program which means that folks program all sorts of extensions and plugins which you can install with a click of the mouse to tailor your browser to fit your needs. The tabbed browsing feature of FF is something that I didn’t see value in until I started using it. Now I am lost without it!

Anyway I’ll go through the work required to make the IE tyrant happy again soon. Please bear with me until that is done.

And thanks Rick for the heads up.

Getting Rich While Having Fun

September 1, 2006

One of the principles I’ve seen looking at the lives of extraordinarily successful people is that the vast majority of them really seem to love what they do. They are very dedicated and often work long hours at their chosen field, but usually seem to have fun along the way.

Steven Scott, in his book A Millionaire’s Notebook, suggests that having fun might even be a requirement to achieving success. He says that you are far less likely to have the commitment and determination that it takes to become successful unless you are having some fun doing it.

Fun First Then Success

Some of you may be thinking at this point, “Well if I became successful and rich of course it would be fun for me.”

Steve says that’s exactly backwards. Read more
