Internet behemoth Google took a major step towards their mission “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful” with their recent beta release of the Chrome web browser. With typical Google focus on simplicity and functionality, Chrome shakes up the usual web browser display a little.

In choosing to release the browsers as open source software Google looks to want to tap into the same type of vast volunteer developer community that has made platforms such as FireFox and WordPress so immensely popular.

First Impressions

The first thing you might notice when using Chrome is that the browser tabs, first made popular with FireFox but now are fixtures all the major browsers, are at the very top of the browser instead beneath the tool bars.

A menu bar is conspicuously absent a la IE7. But perhaps more noticeable is the missing search box. I expected a search giant like Google to make a search box the prominent feature.

Instead they took a different tack and integrated the search function right into the address bar. Very slick, even if it will take a bit of getting used to. Read more

Mac Friday: Choosing a Web Browser

November 2, 2007

Switching to Mac has had some challenges. Most of them are fairly minor.

For example, what web browser is the best one? That’s a question that can spark some heated debate depending on what circles you ask it. Wanna have fun at a tech-geek gathering? Ask it to a group of Mac users and then sit back and watch the fireworks.

It’s sorta like pulling the pin from a hand grenade, and tossing it into the middle of the room to see what will happen.

Anyway this whole thing started because FireFox was beginning to give me problems. Over time it seemed to be hanging up longer and more often. With my current severe scheduling challenges, sitting waiting while a web browser checks out for sometimes several minutes at a crack was getting frustrating to say the least.

I’ve been a FireFox fan for quite a while so when it started giving me fits I felt a little like I was starting over. Everyone’s got their own opinion. Every browser seems to claim they are the fastest. What follows is far from scientific. I’m not a full blown tech-head. So take it for whatever it’s worth. Read more

Check Other Browsers When You Change Your Theme

June 25, 2007

It’s been a long weekend, thanks in part to a silly mistake.

I had the luxury of an entire day on Saturday to work on the computer. It is rare these days that I have such a big block of time available. I had been scheduled to work on Saturday as second on call, which lately means lots of ship jobs. But the ships all moved away from the weekend (for once).Homer Doh!

Since I had the unexpected time windfall, I decided to get something off my list that has been there for some time now. I went ahead and put together a new theme here at SuccessCREEations so that I could update to WordPress 2.2.

I was working on another domain I have to test it all out and hopefully get the bugs out. Got it the way I wanted, then brought it over here.

A couple of tweaks, mess with some plugins, and I was up and running.

Went to be Saturday night feeling good. Read more
