Thanks for visiting!

Yesterday WordPress released a security update in Version 2.6.3. According to the WordPress development blog this version update corrects a vulnerability in the Snoopy Library.

Now unless you want the Red Barron to be able to cause havoc with your blog you will probably want to either update the two files that are changed in this version or update your entire install.

Version 2.7 Coming Soon

The good folks at WordPress are working hard on the next major revision to version 2.7 and which will reportedly be released in the next few weeks.

Version 2.7 will take another leap forward in usability improvement on the back end with the dashboard and all of the administration panels getting a thorough going over.

Last month they conducted a survey to get user input on what changes to prioritize and user preferences on how the dashboard menus should be organized. (Yes we participated in that survey. So if you don’t like the new changes after they come out I guess we are partly to blame for it.)

If you want, go take an early look at the changes. Seems like they are making an already great platform even easier to use.

Can any of you guys recommend good, simple resources for learning how to use wordpress? It seems like a potentially powerful blogging tool, but having never used it myself the idea of just diving in is a bit daunting.

To give you an idea of what I mean: say I purchased a domain name on yahoo domains or something, I wouldn’t even know how to get content onto that domain name, much less use a program like wordpress to do it…

In other words, I’m pretty much limited to web-based services like blogger, livejournal, etc until I can learn these things. It seems like a worthwhile endeavor though. And I tend to pick things up pretty quick once I have a good learning tool…

Thanks a bunch, any and all comments are appreciated!

Andrew, One option would be to hire a consulting firm like ours to help you. Not only do we get your site in place but we train you how to use if effectively. We shorten the learning curve so that our clients can focus on running their businesses while helping them avoid some of the pitfalls that can reduce the effectiveness of their blogs.

However not every business has the budget to hire us. Fortunately there are some good resources for the do-it-yourselfers too.

A great training tool to learn how to use WordPress is WordPressTutorials.com. They’ve got a bunch of training videos that will show you how to use WordPress. I think you’ll find it much easier that you think.

Personally I recommend GoDaddy.com for purchasing domain names (that’s where I get all my domains). You can host your blog at GoDaddy as well if you like.

Another reputable web host is HostGator.

It’s been my experience that dealing with Yahoo when it comes to domains and web hosting can be quite challenging. They lack flexibility and claim it is for increased security. Often making basic changes involves a long three way call (client + Yahoo + me) instead of my just making the change the client requested. Frustrating for me & expensive for my clients.

Lots of people use Yahoo for their domains and hosting, but I groan when a new client tells me that they are.

Thanks for the reply Chris, definitely appreciate it. I’ll check out those resources. You’re correct that I don’t presently have the budget to hire anyone. Mostly because I’m not blogging for business, but rather for a personal endeavor. However, I want to start a company in the near future, so I’ll keep it in mind as an option if I move forward then. And my non-professional endeavors right now will hopefully get me up to speed on the basics if I do move forward with starting a company.

Anyway, thanks again, I’ll take a look at those sites. Really appreciate the feedback.

I have also my blog on Blgospot, but want change it. I think that wordpress is better and you can install it on your server. You have many useful plug-ins and you can modify or create your own theme. Few days ago installed new blog on wordpress.

  6. I was not aware of this update and I’m not able to upgrade before at least one or two weeks. Is this be a huge security risk? How important is this upgrade?

I’m always so far behind in updating my wordpress. This turns out to be a good thing when there’s bugs like this, but not so good for maintaining my page. Mostly, I’m just lazy- any suggestions on a way to update your wordpress without downloading and re-uploading everything? I use the auto-update, but this still requires significant FTP time.

  8. Jordans says:

Kind of off topic, but my flash image uploader doesn’t work on firefox and google chrome.

    but it works on IE?

anyone knows why this is happening?

  10. I’ve never had any problems with security before, so I doubt I will get this new update. It’s just more trouble than it’s worth.

I had few problems with spams, though Akismet took care of it. The new user interface looks pretty much well here with the 2.7, sleeker and gets you to navigate easier.

I have been using Wordpress for some years. It is a great tool. They keep updating it very frequently. Version 2.7 is already out and now they are preparing version 2.8

  14. I use wordpress on my two blogs about 1 year and I don’t upgrade it on 2.6.3 Now, version 2.7 is out and I don’t see any changes.

  15. Peter says:

I updated wordpress to version 2.7 but I agree with dnevni I don’t see any changes, it seems to be the same version maybe I have to wait to version 2.8 and I think this is gonna be better.

I think the new things are in the new themes not in the newest versions of Word Press. There are lot of themes with many options to make the work easyer.
